NFC East combine primer

Wed, 02/22/2012 - 13:30
With the NFL scouting combine kicking off, let's take a look at some of the story lines involving NFC East teams in Indianapolis this week. We'll do them in draft-pick order: Washington Redskins Biggest need: Well, it's quarterback, as everyone within 500 miles of the beltway knows. But the Redskins will also be talking to wide receivers, defensive backs and offensive linemen at this year's combine. They have a number of needs, and a number of different things they can do with the No.

Mike & Mike on the Eagles, Michael Vick

Wed, 02/22/2012 - 11:10
Mike & Mike in the Morning are doing their "two-a-days ," in which they review two NFL teams per day during the offseason, and Wednesday morning's first team was the Philadelphia Eagles -- 2011's most disappointing team. Mike and Mike ran through the usual stuff -- they need a linebacker in the draft, etc. Rattled off the usual names -- Kuechly, Burfict, etc. But then they arrived at what, for me, is the crux of the thing. They started talking about quarterback Michael Vick.

Chat Wrap: Landry era over in Washington?

Wed, 02/22/2012 - 09:00
We had our chat Tuesday. It was fantastic. Groundbreaking. Epic. I'm working on my acceptance speech for Sunday night in the category of "Best Performance by an ESPN.com NFL Division Blogger in a Weekly Chat." But since the Academy refuses to play the highlights of the chats during the awards show, I figure I ought to offer a few of them here. Phil (San Diego): "Is the Laron Landry era officially coming to an end in DC? If so, isn't he a restricted FA, how high do you think the skins will tender him?

Breakfast links: Dallas leadership nonsense

Wed, 02/22/2012 - 07:00
Up and at 'em on a combine week Wednesday. Not sure which of our division's coaches and GMs will be holding news conferences during the big event in Indy, but I believe ESPNNewYork.com and ESPNDallas.com are both staffing it, which means I'd expect to hear from some Giants and Cowboys folks, at least. Will be keeping you posted best I can, I promise. Meantime, chew on some links. New York Giants Brandon Jacobs says he expects to be back with the Giants next season.

Looking at Giants running backs

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:44
Ohm Youngmisuk has his mind today on running back, a position at which the New York Giants could potentially see some changes in the coming season. Brandon Jacobs likely will need to restructure his contract to stay. If he leaves, the Giants likely will have to find a replacement to pair with Ahmad Bradshaw and his busted foot. That replacement could come from the current stable of backups, which comprises Da'rel Scott, D.J. Ware and Andre Brown. It could come from the bargain bin in the free agent market or in the middle-to-late rounds of the draft.

Jenkins restructure a no-brainer for Eagles

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 13:38
I never believed there was a chance that defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins would not be back with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012, but as long as that $5 million March roster bonus was hanging out there, I guess the questions about his status weren't completely ridiculous. Anyway, the Eagles and Jenkins have agreed on a restructuring of Jenkins' contract that will allow him to stay in Philadelphia, where his current employer is extremely happy with him.

These aren't the 'same old Redskins'

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 11:30
I get it, Washington Redskins fans. You've been hurt. You've been burned too many times by big March headlines you thought would bring lasting happiness but instead brought heartache, and now it's difficult for you to trust. You don't want to be hurt again. How else to explain the horrified reaction by a quarterback-starved fan base to the idea of signing Peyton Manning? Judging by the reactions from the folks in our comments section all the way up to the mayor of Washington, D.

Pardon me, boys, is that the Chat ...

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 10:20
... tanooga Choo-Choo? No, it's just the weekly NFC East chat, coming to you live at noon ET as it does every Tuesday. You click on these here blue letters and the magic of the Internet whisks you away to our chat room, in which you can ask me anything you want about the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Redskins, the Oscars, Big East basketball, fantasy baseball ... Well, let's at least try and keep it to those first four topics. I do my best to answer as many as possible, and we have a little fun along the way.

Cowboys must upgrade return game

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 09:02
Yes, as someone who scours the Internet for content ideas on four teams during these slow offseason days, I will miss ESPNDallas.com's position series. But it concludes today with Calvin Watkins' look at special teams. Clearly, the Cowboys found their kicker last year in rookie Dan Bailey, and they'll surely part ways with David Buehler as a result. They may have a decision to make on punter and unrestricted free agent Mat McBriar, but the injuries that plagued McBriar in 2011 could help keep his cost down, and assuming he's fully healed they have reason to believe he can return to his Pro Bowl-caliber form.

Breakfast links: The cornerback market

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 07:00
I link, therefore I am. New York Giants Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com is breaking down his postseason Giants grades and expanding on them position-by-position. His first one is on quarterback, and as you may have guessed, Eli Manning gets an extremely good grade. Big Blue View is also going position-by-position as it looks ahead to free agency. This edition of "strut 'em or cut 'em" is on wide receivers, specifically Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon and Devin Thomas.

Redskins offensive line thoughts

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 15:16
As he looks ahead to the scouting combine, Rich Tandler wonders if the Washington Redskins will be looking for guards. There is work to be done for Washington on the offensive line, and while Jammal Brown remains a question mark (health-wise, if nothing else) at right tackle, most of the focus seems to be on the interior. Per Rich at csnwashington.com: Will Montgomery started 14 games at center in 2011 (he started the other two at left guard) and while he performed respectably, many believe that the team could do better.

Is DeSean Jackson still a great returner?

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 13:01
I feel as though, if I polled most of my Philadelphia Eagles fan readers on the question of whether the Eagles would be wiser to sign wide receiver DeSean Jackson or running back LeSean McCoy to a long-term deal, the overwhelming majority would pick McCoy. But Mark Schlereth was asked this question on SportsCenter and he picked Jackson. His rationale is that they have more time to sign McCoy, which is true, but he said something about Jackson that caught my attention.

Osi Umenyiora plans to 'be quiet'

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 10:58
New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora made a big stink about his contract last summer, but he says he's going to try a different tactic this time around. With one year left on a contract he's made it clear he doesn't like, Umenyiora says last year taught him to "be quiet, say nothing." Umenyiora started chuckling when my old "First Take" friend Dana Jacobson asked him about his contract situation on "SportsCenter" on Monday morning, but he stayed on message during his response.

Can Orlando Scandrick be a starter?

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 09:03
Yeah, that's right. The ESPNDallas.com position series makes a stop today at cornerback, which is a position of extreme need for the Dallas Cowboys. As Tim MacMahon writes, Terence Newman is a sure thing to be cut, and the fact that the Cowboys gave Orlando Scandrick a contract extension during the 2011 season indicates that maybe they're thinking about making him the starter opposite Mike Jenkins. Tim doesn't think that'd be wise: The Cowboys cannot make the mistake of just handing Scandrick a starting role just because he's paid at that level.

Breakfast links: Combine's this week

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 07:00
Morning, all. It's 22 days until the start of NFL free agency and a couple of days until the start of the scouting combine. It's also six days until the Oscars. I have this thing where I try to see all of the Best Picture nominees before the show airs. I have seven of the nine with six days to go, but I'm struggling to find a place nearby where "War Horse" is still playing. Gonna be close. Better have some links. New York Giants The Jersey Journal has the story of Gian-Paul Gonzalez, who can lay claim to originating the "All-In" battle cry the Giants used over and over again en route to their Super Bowl title.

NFC East weekend mailbag

Sat, 02/18/2012 - 11:00
You e-mail, I answer. It's an offseason weekend thing. Nick Curtin from Newark, Del., wants to know if the Dallas Cowboys might be able to pull off trades for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel and New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. Dan Graziano: Obviously, both would fill major needs, assuming Umenyiora would be willing/able to make the switch to outside linebacker in the 3-4. The problem is that these are potential trades and not free-agent acquisitions, which would require only money.

Hatcher wishes Ray Lewis was a Cowboy

Fri, 02/17/2012 - 16:40
Sometimes, pro athletes say things that make you shake your head. Heck, who am I kidding? This happens every day. Today, though, we're looking at you, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jason Hatcher. Hatcher gave a radio interview on ESPN Dallas 103.3 in which he was asked, among other things, who the leaders on his team are: "Dude. I gotta be honest with you: That's a good question. That's a good question. I really don't know. It's just another thing we really need .

Why I would trade Osi Umenyiora

Fri, 02/17/2012 - 13:05
Osi Umenyiora put aside his issues with his contract during the New York Giants' Super Bowl run, which was no surprise. He was having a wonderful time with his teammates, reaping the rare joy that comes when your once-in-a-lifetime experience repeats itself within the space of a half-decade. That wasn't the time to talk contract, and to his credit Umenyiora did not. But the time to talk contract is once again nearly afoot. And with free agency, the draft, offseason minicamps and OTAs and eventually training camp looming, Umenyiora's contract will once again become an issue for the Giants.

Asante Samuel remains an Eagles mystery

Fri, 02/17/2012 - 10:56
We've talked a great deal about the DeSean Jackson situation, and that is the biggest offseason issue facing the Philadelphia Eagles right now. But there's also the matter of cornerback Asante Samuel and whether he'll be a part of what the Eagles are doing in 2012. Samuel played the best of any Eagles cornerback in 2011, which considering the play of the secondary isn't saying much. And he's under contract through 2013. But there are a number of factors that could drive the Eagles to trade Samuel this offseason.

Should the Cowboys re-sign Abram Elam?

Fri, 02/17/2012 - 09:00
I'm going to miss ESPNDallas.com's Cowboys position series when it's gone. We've relied on it a lot over the past week or so for Cowboys content, and I plan on draining every last drop I can out of it. Today's edition is on safeties, and Calvin Watkins specifically takes up the question of whether the Cowboys will or should bring back Abram Elam: Signing Elam might be a good thing for the Cowboys since he knows Ryan's defensive scheme, but he might want a long-term deal, and that's something the franchise might be unwilling to offer.
